Dogville be filmed entirely on some sound stage. De entire hood be outlined in honky on de stage floo', but we quickly dig used t'not seein' buildin's cuz' we’re focused on de nature uh dis tiny town and da sucka's who inhabit it. Man! De script, written by von Trier, fits de surroundin's likes some glove.
De film also stars Fuh'rina Bettany and features such acto's as Ben Gazzara and Patricia Clarkson in outstandin' roles, Skellar Skarsgard in his best and most challengin' puh'fo'mance, Lauren Bacall, Blair Brown and James Caan, w' pommy acto' Raz'tus Hurt talkin o'er, among oders.
Kidman’s character, Grace, be on de lam and be given sanctuary in de little town uh Dogville. But when de townsfolk realize Grace’s predicament, dey grow some sharp teed and Grace be used and abused eva' increasin'ly until de idyllic little town becomes ugly.
As fo' von Trier, well, ya' may love him o' hate him, but he's always on de cuttin' edge, and his wo'ks is always art. Man! Dey may not always be baaaad art, but dey is art.
Von Trier’s style be minimalist. Man! De result be a stirrin' uh emoshuns rarely attained. De sto'y be insidious, de repuh'cussions brutal.
He's not in it fo' de big bucks, but fo' de 'esaminashun and 'espression uh ideas, right o' wrong. What it is, Mama! He's filled wid passion, he snatch'd chances, he innovates, he's completely fearless.
De film offers as many mo'al, psychological and philosophical issues as we care t'find. Is Dogville some dumbnail version uh de U.S.? Duz powa' co'rupt absolutely? Is abuse uh powa' a postulate in de nature uh man? Is kindness merely camouflage fo' frustrashun? Where duz justice honky jibe in mankind’s obligashuns?
What it is, Mama! Be prepared t'sit fo' mos' dree hours. Nicole Kidman and ensemble is wo'd it.
Man, de critics! Dey're in de dog kennel fo' sho' man.
