Haiku to You Too   Oct 3 2005

Filed under Menticulture by Ewen Shearer

Haiku in English is Rafferty’s Rules.

Life pours as water
coalescing out of drops –
Momentary time.

The joy of poetry escaped me for 60 years. One magical day Haiku appeared, which so piquantly paints Japanese thought I’m forever its prisoner of delight.

While subtle intricacies of Japanese art lie beyond ability and patience, and purist adherence to format requires scholarly grasp, my hope is to simply make some art.

And Life is short.

Season words, as per essays, broaden to the subjects anything and everything. Cutting happens by pleasant happenstance.

In three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables – without trying to relate or reconcile them with ‘on’ or ‘morae’ – a syllabic constraint, sufficiently difficult to enforce word economy, creates a delicate rhythm and, importantly, sounds to my untrained ear as a pensive and reflective Basho might (on perhaps an off-day).

Nectar of the gods.
Coffee forty three beans long –
Spice exemplary.

For me it is a perfect way of discovering life’s minor epiphanies.

Civilization ..

   defiles itself

Times past when warlords, priests and royalty hoarded luxury, life was a short grim struggle. Today most want for little yet still deny dignified survival to working poor, and ravage entire countries as collateral to our laissez faire fiesta.

Charity

~ its own reward

And what's going on in Land of the Free, Home of the Brave? As 40% of kids fail graduation the Iraqistan wars suck $2.4 trillion [CBO 2017 est]. Imagine this staggering sum applied to rebuilding The Great Society. Think of others.

This lazy unemployed

..crack-smoking welfare queen ran up U$15 trillion debt

lazy homeless scum
Odd how the ultra-wealthy gull even working poor to blame unemployed, disabled, weak, and vulnerable while but for the grace of God go all.

If he's a welfare leech then your soul is with the sociopaths and predators who own Warshington and its minions, the Repugnicans and Dumfocrats, gutting a once noble nation that aspired to equality.

This elite will survive the US economic train wreck, land softly on 300 million plundered taxpayers, then from fortresses of luxury and privilege prey elsewhere for spoils.

The dawn of civilization was greatly exaggerated.
